Time Capsule Found at GLHS

In July, construction crews made a surprising discovery when a time capsule dating back to 1927 was uncovered as the cornerstone of the original Gahanna Lincoln High School was removed for relocation. Hidden away for nearly a century, the capsule offers a glimpse into the school’s earliest days and the community that helped build our foundation.

Inside the lead capsule were documents and newspaper clippings that have remained untouched since the school was built. While time has naturally left its mark on some of the items, each piece tells part of the story of GLHS in a way that was well preserved for its time.

Recognizing the significance of the discovery, Superintendent Dr. Tracey Deagle quickly contacted the Gahanna Historical Society to seek their expert advice on how best to handle and safeguard the documents for all to enjoy. After meeting with members from the society, Dr. Deagle officially entrusted the time capsule and its contents to the Historical Society, where the artifacts will be carefully preserved, cataloged and examined by local historians.

“Discoveries like this remind us that every generation leaves something behind for the next,” Dr. Deagle said. “As we celebrate the future of Gahanna Lincoln High School, we are equally committed to honoring the history that helped shape our schools and our community.”

The partnership with the Gahanna Historical Society ensures these historic items, along with other important memorabilia from the former GLHS, will receive the specialized care they deserve. The time capsule represents the first phase of this ongoing effort, with additional pieces of GLHS history joining the Historical Society’s collection over time. As GJPS and the Historical Society continue to archive photographs, trophies, documents and other historic items, future displays will provide opportunities for alumni, students, families and community members to reconnect with the school’s legacy.

For now, the nearly 100-year-old time capsule has found a safe home, where its contents can be carefully preserved before being shared with the community that has proudly carried Gahanna Lincoln's story forward for generations.
